Montréal’s Best Independent Bookstores for Readers and Writers

Montreal's Place Jacques-Cartier
Montréal's vibrant Place Jacques-Cartier

Montréal’s independent bookstores have long been at the heart of the city's cultural pulse, not just as retailers, but as spaces where ideas, creativity, and even rebellion have flourished. From the era of Henri Tranquille’s bookshop during Quebec’s Quiet Revolution to the indie bookstores of today, these shops have been meeting places for readers and writers, playing a role in shaping Montréal’s identity. As a Montréal publisher, we value these establishments for their support of local authors and publishers, including Stygian Society publications.

Here are some notable Montréal indie bookstores that contribute to the city's colourful literary scene:

Located in Montréal's NDG neighborhood, Phoenix Books specializes in used books and offers a curated selection of new and local literature. Owned by Melanie (an author herself!), the store hosts artisan pop-ups, poetry readings, and creative events, providing a welcoming space for the community to connect and unwind. Phoenix Books stocks a variety of titles, including a prominent display of works by local authors and publications from local publishers like The Stygian Society.

Founded in 2004 by Peter and Sean, Encore Books is a beloved NDG staple. This father/son duo's shared love for books and music led them to open the store after years of sourcing and supplying retail outlets. With the help of Ryan (Peter's other son), they have created a cozy, quirky and welcoming space for readers to find new treasures. Encore Books also offers a wide variety of titles (with an excellent philosophy section) and proudly displays local creators and publishers, including works from The Stygian Society.

Situated in Mile End, Librairie Drawn & Quarterly is a cornerstone of Montréal’s literary culture. Founded in 2007 by the renowned comic publisher, it revitalized the city’s book scene with a thoughtful selection of graphic novels and English-language literature. Housed in a former dress shop, the store showcases high-quality publications and hosts events that bring together writers, artists, and readers. Its shelves reflect a deep appreciation for storytelling, making it an important and iconic space for Montréal’s creative community as well as a destination for book lovers.

Located in Verdun, Librairie Pulp Books & Café is an English-language bookstore founded by Alex Nierenhausen and Daphnée Anctil. Spanning 1,200 square feet with up to 10,000 books, it specializes in contemporary fiction, graphic novels, and nonfiction. The store evolves its selection based on the neighborhood’s tastes. The café offers espresso drinks, with a summer terrasse for outdoor seating. Regular events, including readings and signings, connect local and national authors with readers. Pulp Books is a bright community space for literature and conversation!

Established in 2018, Librairie Saint-Henri Books is an eclectic indie bookstore in Montréal’s Saint-Henri neighborhood. Specializing in English-language books, it offers over 5,000 titles across fiction, nonfiction, poetry, graphic novels, and more. Committed to diversity, the store highlights works by POC, queer, and Indigenous authors. Beyond books, it carries locally sourced zines, greeting cards, and unique gifts. The shop also hosts free events like author readings, book clubs, and workshops, creating a welcoming space for readers to connect and discover new voices.

Founded in 1966, Argo Bookshop is Montréal’s oldest independent English-language bookstore. Nestled in Shaughnessy Village, it offers a carefully chosen selection of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and philosophy, with specialties in linguistics, Japan, and marginalized voices. The shop features books on race, gender, and queer issues, alongside a strong young adult and children's section. Argo is also a community hub, hosting readings, signings, book clubs, and write-ins, all in support of Montréal’s diverse literary scene.

Located in the heart of downtown Montréal, Paragraphe Bookstore has been a literary landmark since 1981. Across from McGill University, it offers a rich selection of books, from academic texts to popular fiction and nonfiction. Known for its deep ties to the local literary community, Paragraphe hosts author events, book launches, and the celebrated Books & Breakfast series. As one of the city’s last remaining English-language independent bookstores, it continues to be a place of discovery, conversation, and culture for readers of all kinds.
